South African music,Township Jazz Sipho Gumede July 2004/ Art Kelly - March 2004 / Gito Boloi - April 2004/ Chris Parkin June 2004

> RIP Sipho Gumede, Gito Boloi, Art Kelly & Chris Parkin.
3 Legendary Bassists & a sound man leave us here to wander; what's happening? Age, the Cherokee say, is a privilege denied to many. Young SAfrica you too will be history soon; old, age, experience!? In reality, record, TV & radio controlled commercial Spin Doctors are encouraged to resuscitate thedecomposing lost-legends while money monsters manipulate media & re-invent the past to hit the bottom line; more often than not while the young are still running; and sometimes in the opposite direction. No wonder the youth are scared and have no respect for history's inevitability. Musicians of all genres have very little of value to fall back on in SAfrica the bigger they get, the harder they fall without support. Music Sponsors should understand - invest in training & development & infrastructure, from the bottom up. Music is a human right, not just a commercial commodity. The benefits that follow the dead & escape the living & working musician, must be viewed for what they are & are not: a consumer & catalogue rip-off - RIP Musician's Wanted - Better Dead Than Alive!?. Sipho Gumede for example, was often denied the applause he deserved in his lifetime; but what makes it really sad, is that this denial came from some of the very people who want to honour him now. It's a sham & a shame. More in the next edition.
